One of 'Sabra and Shatila' Butchers Reveals His Massacres

GAZA, March 5, 2005 (IPC + Agencies) - - A Lebanese war criminal who was directly involved in the Sabra and Shatila massacre revealed the horrible crimes he had committed during the seventies and eighties against Palestinian refugees.

In an interview with the Israeli newspaper 'Yedioth Ahronoth', Robert Hatem, which is also known as 'Cobra', said he murdered almost 400 victims with his own hands, and took part in killing thousands others.

Cobra added that when the interrogators complained of the packed prisoners and there are many of them who have become "disposable", he executed them with one bullet from his Magnum pistol, adding that he enjoyed listening to the victims beg for their life before he shot them in the back or the head.

Robert Hatem has been living in Paris since 1997, after being granted temporary asylum due to his former relations with the French intelligence, while the French Foreign Ministry refused to give him permanent asylum because he "killed dozens in cold blood", alleging it was adhering to the Fourth Geneva Convention, which says that a person may not be expelled from the host country to a country he might face a death sentence in.

'Cobra' has been the personal bodyguard of the infamous Eli Hobeika during the seventies and eighties of the past century, where he proudly declared that he took part in the massacres of Tal Al Zaatar, as well as the massacre of Sabra and Shatila refugee camps.

Hatem joined the Lebanese Militia in 1975, where he committed his first murder by killing a Sudanese fighter in a gun battle near Forn Al Shobak area. According to his confessions, he panicked in the beginning while shooting at him, but later he lost his humanity and didn't find any difficulties in committing his following crimes.

Later he joined the Unit 104, which is a secret operations unit in the militia, which received combat training in Israel and southern Lebanon. Hatem says he has visited Israel secretly more than 20 times to meet with Israeli army and intelligence officers, and sent his men also to be trained by the Israeli General Security Service (Shabak).

According to his interview with Yedioth Ahronoth, 'Cobra' was also assigned to personally guard Ariel Sharon, then Israel's Minister of Defense, in Lebanon. He "proudly" noted that Sharon never felt safe in Lebanon except with him.

The war criminal enumerated his many crimes in Lebanon, including the abduction of women and girls that Eli Hobeika fancied, as well as carrying out attacks against Syrian and Iranian diplomats. He said he fled to Paris when he feared for his life from the Syrians.
